UN considers the entry of Turkish troops into Iraq as “breach of sovereignty”
(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari demanded the United Nations to take a role in preserving the unity and sovereignty of Iraq, while the Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations Jan Kubis has considered the entry of Turkish troops in the province of Nineveh as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
Jaafari said in a statement on the sidelines of a meeting with Kubiš, “Iraq has the right to resort to the UN Security Council and demand the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from Iraqi territory,” stressing “The importance of the United Nations in taking a role to preserve the unity and sovereignty of Iraq and to prevent any outside interference.”
Jaafari added: “Iraq stressed during all international conferences the need for the provision of military as well as security and humanitarian services and support in its war against ISIS.”
For his part, Kubiš stressed that “The United Nations is considering what has been done by Turkey as a violation of sovereignty,” noting that” He discussed this problem with the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad and informed him of the need to resolve this issue with the Iraqi side.”
