(IraqiNews.com) Basra – The Japanese Ambassador to Iraq asserted on Tuesday, that his country has provided Iraq with more than seven billion dollars for economic development, stressing the possibility of opening a consulate of Japan in Basra, while the provincial council stressed the need for the contribution of Japanese companies in the investments of gas.

The Japanese Ambassador to Iraq Fumio Iwai said during a press conference with the Head of Basra District Council at the council’s headquarters: “The Government of Japan has provided support for Iraq consisting of seven billion and 250 million dollars, in form of loans and grants for economic development,” stressing that, “The continuation of Japan’s support for Iraq depends on the success of the Iraqi government in economic development and reconstruction.”

Iwai added that his country is considering opening a consulate in Basra after Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs Ibrahim al-Jaafari had presented a request to inaugurate a Japanese consulate in Basra.
