Shooting rampage in Munich kills ten and injures sixteen
(IraqiNews.com) BAGHDAD – Ten people, including a gunman, have been killed and sixteen others injured in a shooting at Olympia shopping center in Munich, Germany.
According to German media reports, police identified the gunman as an 18-year-old German-Iranian national- whose name is kept withheld.
“Citing eyewitness accounts, police yesterday said that they were looking for up to three suspects in the shooting. But, today early morning a Munich police spokesman said that the attack was likely carried out by the lone gunman,” stated German media on Saturday morning, adding, “The police gave a cautious all-clear signal as well.”
Authorities in Germany have confirmed that the motive behind the attack is not yet known.
Hubertus Andrä, Munich police chief, while interacting with the media early today morning said, “The motives for this abhorrent act have not yet been completely clarified and we still have contradictory clues.”
It may be mentioned here that ISIS has not claimed responsibility of the attack and the police, till the filing of this report, were not sure if the attack was planned or unplanned.
It may be mentioned here that Munich prosecutor Thomas Steinkraus-Koch said that the the 18-year-old German-Iranian gunman had suffered depression and reportedly undergone psychiatric treatment.
Meanwhile, several public figures have offered their condolences to people in Munich following the shooting.
German president Joachim Gauck said, “I am deeply shocked by the murderous attack in Munich. My thoughts are with all the victims and all those who are grieving or fearing for a loved one.”
US President Barack Obama said, “Our hearts go out to those who may have been injured. Germany is one of our closest allies so we are going to pledge all the support that they may need in dealing with these circumstances.”
Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson in a statement said, “I am shocked and appalled by the terrible attack unfolding this evening in Munich, and the loss of life. We stand ready to assist our friends in Germany.”
Charlie Flanagan, Irish minister for foreign affairs and trade, said he was ‘horrified’ by the attack.
