200 ISIS members arrive to Syria’s Raqqa: rights group
Baghdad – (IraqiNews.com) Two-hundred Islamic State militants arrived from Iraq to the group’s Syrian stronghold city of Raqqa, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Forty-six of those were deployed to al-Bab region, northeast of Aleppo, a statement by the organization said. They are mainly former Iraqi army personnel who act as booby-trapping experts for the group.
According to observatory, the battalion will be responsible for planting explosives around Raqqa, the group’s main Syrian haven and the target of decisive military operations by US-led, Russian and Turkish forces against the militant group.
Reports over the last month have spoken about several ISIS militants escaping battles in Iraq to Raqqa, with the group closing borders with Syria at one stage and executing fleeing elements.
Iraqi popular militias fighting ISIS said recently they effectively blocked the group’s escape and supply routes between Iraq and Syria.
