Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq has been elected for the vice-presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the foreign ministry announced on Friday.

“Iraq has been selected deputy chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Council during the council’s first sessions which were held days earlier,” ministry spokesperson Ahmed Gamal said in a statement.

The selection came as Iraq won council membership for the first time last October, gaining the votes of 173

“The large number of states that had voted for joining Iraq reflects the enhanced international community’s confidence in efforts exerted by the Iraqi foreign ministry for two years to win council membership,” he said.
