Diyala (IraqiNews.com) A civilian was killed, while a police conscript was injured in an armed attack, northeast of Diyala, a security source from the province said on Thursday.

“A civilian and a conscript from customs police, who are from Jalawla region, were attacked by unidentified gunmen on the main road of Baqubah-Khanaqeen, northeastern Diyala,” the source told Alghad Press.

The attack, according to the source, “left the civilian killed and the conscript profoundly wounded.”

The victim was taken to forensic medicine department, while the injured was transferred to hospital.

On Wednesday, two policemen were killed and seven others, including a commander and another officer, were wounded in a bomb blast in al-Terfaya region, at the outskirts of Jalawla.

Diyala police launched, earlier on the day, a wide scale military operation along with army troops to follow Islamic State remnants in Jalawla.

According to the monthly release by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 69 civilians, excluding police personnel, were killed, while 142 others were wounded in December due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict across the country.

3298 civilians were killed and 4781 others were wounded in 2017, excluding Anbar civilian casualty figures for November and December, which are not available, the report added.
