Iraqi troops arrest IS member over kidnapping, killing civilians in Mosul
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that its forces captured an Islamic State member, who was tasked with kidnapping and murdering civilians in Mosul city.
“Military intelligence forces of the Army’s 20th Division managed to arrest an IS militant during a military operation in Tal Zalat area in northern Mosul,” Iraqi website Alghad Press quoted the Security Media Center as saying in a statement.
“The terrorist, as a fighter of the terrorist Daesh (Islamic State) group, was responsible for carrying out kidnapping and murder operations in northern Mosul,” the statement read.
The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city.
Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.
Despite the group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.
