Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Three Islamic State militants were killed as they attempted attacking a security checkpoint, west of Anbar, a paramilitary official said on Friday.

In remarks to Almaalomah website, Qutri al-Obeidi, of the mobilization forces in Anbar, said “security troops managed to kill three Islamic State members while attempting to attack a security checkpoint at the Kilo 18 region, west of Anbar. No casualties among security troops occurred.”

Security troops, according to Obeidi, “tightened security measures along the strategic road there to avoid security failure.”

Earlier today, Baghdad Today website quoted security sources saying that militants attacked the special operations regiment headquarter, west of Ramadi. Four members, including an officer, were wounded in the attack.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

In December, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced gaining control on all the territories that were captured by Islamic State, since 2014.
