IS militants shoot two Iraqi civilians dead in Kirkuk
Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) – Two Iraqi civilians were killed Sunday in an armed attack by Islamic State in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk, a security source was quoted as saying.
Speaking to al-Madar News TV channel, the source said that IS militants opened fire at two civilians in al-Rashad district, southwest of Kirkuk, in the wee hours of Sunday, leaving the pair dead.
The source added that the security forces cordoned off the scene and started a search operation for the IS militants behind the attack.
The two bodies were moved to the forensic medicine department, according to the source.
Kirkuk officials previously urged reinforcing military troops in the south and west of the province, as the region still has Islamic State members who escaped during liberation of Hawija to remote areas.
In December 2017, former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared final victory over the terrorist Islamic State group three years after the militant group captured about a third of Iraq’s territory.
