Two bodies recovered from sinking ferry in northern Iraq

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi rescue workers have recovered two more bodies from the Tigris River, where a ferry packed with holidaymakers sank there almost two weeks ago.

“Rescue workers recovered two bodies of the victims of the sinking ferry in the city of Hamam al-Alil and near al-Horriya Bridge in Mosul,” Baghdad Today website quoted the civil defense directorate as saying in a statement.

“The two bodies were moved to the forensic medicine department,” the directorate added.

A ferry sank near the tourist island of Umm Rabaen north of Mosul on March 21 while it was carrying people celebrating Nowruz, which marks the Kurdish New Year.

The incident left scores of people, mostly children and women, dead and missing.

The ferry was overloaded with more than 100 people although it was designed to carry only 30 people.
