Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) – Six Iraqi security men were killed Tuesday while on mission to arrest perpetrators of a terrorist attack in Salahuddin province.
The Iraqi Security Media Cell, in a press statement, stated that a security force came under attack as they launched a manhunt for a terrorist cell implicated in the explosion of a police vehicle in al-Tarmiyah district in Salahuddin.
Six security men were killed in the attack and the death toll is expected to rise, the statement read.
Three of the attackers were killed in the operation as well, it added.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for attacks targeting security forces across Iraq.
Between June 2014 and December 2017, the Islamic State group controlled 88,000 sq km of territory stretching from western Syria to eastern Iraq, imposing its brutal rule on almost eight million people.
The militant group secured billions of dollars in revenue from oil, extortion, robbery and kidnapping.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 with the help of a US-led alliance, having retaken all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.
