Iraq plans to sign liquefied natural gas deal with Qatar
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – To avoid the upcoming summer scorching heat in Iraq, the Minister of Electricity in Iraq, Adel Karim, informed Bloomberg that Iraq is looking to sign an agreement with Qatar in May to import liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Even though Iraq has the resources, the country still struggles with electricity for the general population due to local corruption and past instability. To help diversify gas imports away from neighboring Iran, the Ministry of Electricity is looking elsewhere to avoid summer power outages.
Iraq does not have the infrastructure to re-gasify LNG, thus Karim informed Bloomberg that a vessel ship from American firm, Excelerate Energy, will transport and re-gasify Qatari gas once it reaches Iraqi ports.
