Rocket falls near checkpoint in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / IraqiNews.com: A rocket fell near a checkpoint in western Kirkuk on Sunday but did not explode, according to a source from the city’s Joint Coordination Center (JCC). “A rocket whose type is not identified yet landed near the Kiwan checkpoint, (8 km) western Kirkuk, on Sunday. The firing source is also unknown,” the source told IraqiNews.com news agency. Kiwan checkpoint lies between the military base of Kiwan, the main headquarters of the 12th Division in Kirkuk, and the North Oil Company. “Forces from the Baiji Police Department, the Emergency Police Department and the Civil Defense Department headed to the site and removed the rocket without incident,” the source added. The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Kurdish, Turkmen and Arab population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AmR (P) 3
