Iran asserts its military operations in Iraq to protect its national security
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations called for the implementation of the agreements signed with the Iraqi government to close the headquarters and disarm the ‘terrorists’ opposing the Iranian regime in northern Iraq.
Iran’s mission sent a letter to the members of the UN Security Council to clarify Iran’s stance on its military operation in northern Iraq during the past few days, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
The letter mentioned that Iran had no other choice after the numerous consultations with officials in the Iraqi government and northern Iraq.
“Iran has no other choice but to use its right to defend itself within the framework of the international law in order to protect its national security. Accordingly, Iran recently carried out operations against terrorist groups stationed in northern Iraq,” the letter stated.
The letter explained that Iran has been a target for attacks by terrorist groups stationed in Kurdistan region who recently intensified their activities and illegally transferred quantities of weapons to Iran to arm their affiliated groups to carry out terrorist operations.
The letter stressed the need to have Iraqi military forces present on the borders between the two countries.
IRNA pointed out that the Iraqi side had agreed to the Iranian requests and committed to a time frame to complete the disarmament of these terrorist groups.
No effective measures have been taken to implement this agreement until today, and therefore Iran certainly demands the implementation of the agreement, IRNA mentioned.
Iran stressed it fully respects the security and stability of Iraq and commits to the territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty of Iraq, IRNA added.
