Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Although nearly two decades have passed since the secret American mission, which was carried out by special operations forces and led to the arrest of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, its details have returned to the fore again.

A veteran shared information from his experience when he was part of the squad that captured the late president on December 7, 2003.

In a television episode, retired army Sergeant Kevin Holland explained that the ‘Delta Force’ team told the Iraqi president when he was arrested that “President Bush sends him his regards,” when they took him out of a hole in which he was hiding underground, in reference to U.S. President George W. Bush Jr., according to a report published by the New York Post.

Holland also described the mission as difficult, revealing that information reached the American squad stating that Saddam Hussein was hiding in a hole in the land of a small agricultural town in Iraq.

Holland explained that the hole was covered with a layer of tree leaves and sand to hide its location, and had a small tube to allow airflow.

Holland clarified that the soldiers threw a hand grenade into the hole after they discovered that it was lined with bricks, and then a human voice speaking Arabic came out.

“I took my hands out of the hole, holding a head with thick hair, to discover that he was Saddam Hussein,” Holland explained, describing the president’s condition as being shocked.

Holland also revealed that a ‘Glock 18’ pistol was in possession of the Iraqi President, explaining that that weapon is now with George W. Bush.

Holland added that the Saddam Hussein confirmed his identity to the American squad, and declared his willingness to negotiate.

The United States of America carried out a military operation in December 2003 in which it arrested former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging, and he was executed on December 30, 2006.
