 Iraqi, Finnish FMs discuss bilateral ties

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, met with the Finnish Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto, on the sidelines of the meetings of the third session of the Iraqi-European Cooperation Council in Brussels, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

The meeting was attended by the Iraqi Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Affairs, the Head of the Europe Department in the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, and the Iraqi Ambassador to the European Union, the statement mentioned.

The meeting addressed ways to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between the two countries, and both sides exchanged views on issues of common interest, and on regional and international developments, the statement clarified.

The two officials talked about the repercussions of the current crises and their impacts on the Middle East and the world, particularly the Syrian crisis, the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Palestinian issue, the statement explained.

Hussein and Haavisto also discussed ways to enhance calm after tension escalated in the occupied territories, the statement elaborated.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister praised the active role of the member states of the European Union, including Finland, and their support for Iraq in various fields, the statement added.

Haavisto confirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening the bilateral cooperation in accordance with the provisions of the partnership and cooperation agreement between Iraq and the European Union, praising Iraq’s constructive role in defusing crises in the region.
