1500 tons of wheat offered to Missan farmers

MISSAN / IraqiNews.com: The agricultural department in Missan offered 1500 tons of wheat to farmers in the province within preparations for the winter season, a local official said on Friday. “The amount was distributed to farmers at a price of 560,000 Iraqi dinars per ton, subsidized by the agriculture ministry,” Hassan Lazim, the chairman of the Missan Provincial Council’s agriculture & water resources committee, told IraqiNews.com news agency. Lazim said that the winter agricultural plan envisaged the allotment of 220,000 donums to cultivate wheat and 210,000 donums to cultivate barley out of a total 525,000 donums of cultivable lands reserved for the winter season. One Iraqi donum equals 2500 square meters. Missan, with a population of more than one million, is one of Iraq’s agricultural provinces, boasting 466 million donums, including 324 million donums of fertile arable lands. The province, 390 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, is also rich in water resources, having the River Tigris and its tributaries. AmR (S) 24
