 Iraqi President receives highest order of merit in Italy

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Rashid, received on Monday the highest order of merit from the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, in recognition of his efforts in promoting historical relations between the two countries, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Presidency.

President Rashid also awarded the Italian President the highest honor in Iraq, which is given to a president in recognition of his efforts and to express pride in the deep ties between the two countries, the statement mentioned.

The awarding ceremony took place during a dinner hosted by the Italian President in honor of President Rashid, who is on an official visit to Italy.

Iraq’s First Lady, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, Iraqi ministers, several advisors, and senior officials attended the dinner.

In a speech he delivered, the Iraqi President confirmed that peace and cultural interaction between people are the basis of the progress of civilizations.

Rashid added that environmental issues such as pollution, drought, and the increasing desertification are now threatening people’s lives, while the threats of war in many places may lead to disasters in light of the current armaments.

The Iraqi President indicated that relations between Iraq and Italy are strong, explaining that Italy participated in the reconstruction process in Iraq, supported Iraq’s positions internationally, trained its armed forces, and participated in the fight against terrorism.

Rashid expressed appreciation for the sacrifices of the Italian forces in Iraq.
