Landmark surgery to remove fetus from 27-month-old child

NINEWA / IraqiNews.com: A medical team in the pediatric and neo-natal center in Ninewa successfully removed a fetus from the abdomen of a 27-month-old child in a landmark surgery in Iraq, a medic said on Thursday. “The team spotted and removed a fetus from the abdomen of a child aged 2.3 years at al-Khansaa Teaching Hospital’s pediatric and neo-natal center in Mosul,” Dr. Mo’taz Abduljawwad al-Aani, who led the team of surgeons, told IraqiNews.com news agency. “The child had been referred to the center suffering from terrible pain in the abdomen, coupled with high temperature. Lab examinations showed that there was a 7×7 cyst right beneath the liver,” he said. “During the course of the operation there appeared a large amount of pus in the intestines after a mysterious cyst exploded. This cyst contained a fetus of no more than six weeks old. It was composed of a big head, abdomen and a tail,” Dr. Aani noted. He said that apparently the fetus was the twin sibling resulted from binary fission inside the same placenta. “Due to the growth of a fetus way faster than the other, it swallows the smaller one that remains inside the abdomen until after birth,” he explained.
