Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, confirmed on Monday that Iraq is committed to protecting the environment.

Abdul-Ghani’s remarks took place during his participation in the first dialogue of the MENA Climate Week 2023 in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where oil and energy ministers of Saudi Arabia, India and the UAE attended, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Oil Ministry.

The Iraqi Oil Minister indicated that the Iraqi economy relies heavily on revenues generated from oil exports; thus, the government has taken important steps to reduce emissions and preserve the environment.

The Iraqi official explained that the government supports renewable energy projects and commits to standards approved in this regard.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the MENA Climate Week 2023 is an annual event that brings together leaders from governments, businesses, international organizations and civil society to explore ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to the mounting fallout from the climate crisis.

As the second of four regional climate weeks held this year, the MENA Climate Week 2023 builds momentum ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference COP 28 in Dubai and the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake, designed to chart the way for fulfilling the Paris Agreement’s goals.
