Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Iraqi Ministry of Interior reopened the Hatra police station to enhance law enforcement efforts and safety in communities in eastern Nineveh.

The police station has been completely rehabilitated and furnished with new rooms and office equipment after it was destroyed by an air strike during the conflict with ISIS terrorists, according to a statement released by the UNDP.

The rehabilitation of the police station took place through UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS) with support from the Italian government.

The police station will play an important role in improving security and restoring stability to around 20,000 people live in the area.

Representatives of the Iraqi government and the UNDP attended the inauguration of the police station.

The UNDP’s FSS rehabilitated 57 police stations across Iraq’s liberated governorates, serving 3.4 million people. More than 40 of these police stations are in Nineveh.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), has been supporting Iraq’s stabilization since 2015.

The generous contribution of the Italian government to the FFS has funded 143 critical projects to restore Iraq’s education, health, water, and electrical sector.

Iraq announced in late 2017 the liberation of all its territories from the grip of ISIS, but the authorities are constantly launching security operations to pursue remnants of the terrorist group.
