One minute mourning in Iraq in commemoration of Halabja chemical attack.

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com – Iraq’s Council of Ministers has decided on Wednesday to announce a one-minute mourning, in commemoration of the anniversary of the chemical attack on northern Iraq’s Kurdish city of Halabja by the country’s former ruling Baath regime, that killed 5,000 and injured 10,000 of the city’s inhabitants on March 16, 1988.   “The Council of Ministers has decided to announce a one-minute mourning at 11:00 local time today (Wednesday) all over Iraq, in commemoration of the Halabja catastrophe,” the semi-official al-Iraqiya TV Satellite channel reported.   Noteworthy is that Halabja city had been attacked by chemical weapons on March 16, 1988, by Iraq ’s forming ruling Baath regime, killing 5,000 civilians and wounding 10,000 others of the city’s inhabitants, according to Kurdish official data.   436
