Legislature warns from raising case against Iraq’s President for his refusal to sign execution sentences

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Legislature of Iraq’s National Coalition, Batoul Farouq, has warned on Saturday from raising a case against Iraq ’s President Jalal Talabani, for his refusal to sign execution sentences against several leading officials of Iraq ’s former ruling Baath regime.   Farouq’s statement was issued against threats by the Legislature of the State of Law Coalition , Hussein al-Assadi, to raise a judicial case against President Jalal Talabani, due to his refusal to ratify execution sentences against leaders of the former Baath regime, charging Talabani with “having violated his Constitutional oath.”   “I don’t expect that the National Coalition would raise a judicial case against President Jalal Talabani, on the background of his non-ratification of execution sentences against the symbols of the former regime,” she said, warning “that that would be the only remaining choice, if Talabani insists not to ratify the execution sentences.”   Noteworthy is that the High Iraqi Judicial Court had issued in June, 2007, decisions to execute Ali Hassan al-Majid, half-brother of Iraq’s former President, Saddam Hussein, former Defense Minister, Sultan Hashem and former Military Intelligence Chief, Hussein Rashid al-Tikrity, condemned for having carried out the so-called “Anfal” operations, launched by the former regime against citizens of north Iraq’s Kurdistan Region in 1988.   The Execution was implemented against Ali Hassan al-Majid only on Dec. 25, 2010.   Iraq ’s President Jalal Talabani refuses to sign execution sentences against former Defense Minister, Sultan Hashem and other former regime leaders, due to Talabani’s occupation of the post of the Acting Chairman of the Socialist International, which rejects executions in the world.   SKH (RT)
