300 million cubic feet Halfaya gas field project to start operation in 3 months
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, said on Tuesday that the trial operation of the Halfaya gas field project, which has a capacity of 300 million cubic feet per day, would begin within three months.
Abdul-Ghani told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the gas produced from the Halfaya field in the southern Iraqi governorate of Maysan will be used to operate power plants.
The Iraqi Oil Minister noted that many projects have been launched, including the Basra NGL project carried out by Basra Gas Company (BGC) in partnership with Shell and the South Gas Company.
Abdul-Ghani indicated that a contract has been signed with TotalEnergies to utilize 600 million cubic feet of gas in addition to generating electricity from solar energy and the use of seawater to support pressure in the reservoir and enhance oil recovery.
The Halfaya field has estimated oil reserves of 4.1 billion barrels, and it is 30 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide.
Iraq’s state-owned Missan Oil Company held a tender to develop the oilfield, which was won in December 2009 by a consortium including PetroChina, TotalEnergies, and Petronas.
In January 2010, a 20-year production deal was struck between the consortium and South Oil Company, with PetroChina serving as the operator.
