Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, and the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signed on Monday a cooperation framework agreement on water.
The bilateral agreement aims to foster understanding and collaboration in the water sector based on the principles of equality, good intentions, and good neighborliness, in addition to creating a new vision for the implementation of infrastructure and investment projects pertaining to water resources in Iraq, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The statement mentioned that the agreement focuses on allocating cross-border waters fairly and equally and establishing a goal for the efficient and sensible use of water.
The agreement calls for cooperation through joint projects to improve water management in the Tigris and Euphrates basins. It also invites Turkish businesses to collaborate on irrigation projects such as building water dams, canal lining, filtration and desalination plants, and water treatment.
The two sides will carry out projects to exchange experiences and use modern irrigation systems and techniques, according to the agreement.
The 10-year agreement will automatically be renewed for an additional year with the consent of both parties.
