Iraq condemns Slovak PM assassination attempt
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced on Wednesday the assassination attempt of the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico.
In a statement, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry stated that it affirms its solidarity with the government and people of Slovakia and its rejection of all forms of violence and destabilization attempts, in addition to strongly denouncing the assassination attempt against Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico.
Fico was shot five times in an assassination attempt that shook the country following a government meeting that was held in the town of Handlova in central Slovakia.
The assassination attempt took place in the street outside the cultural center, where the meeting was held, when a small group of people, including the accused shooter, were waiting for Fico to greet him.
The Slovak Prime Minister appeared on camera being helped into a car by his staff before it quickly left the area.
After being brought to a nearby hospital, Fico was flown by helicopter to Banska Bystrica, a significant trauma center approximately 20 miles (30 kilometers) away.
According to Slovak news outlets, the gunman was a member of the Slovak Society of Writers, the author of three poetry books, and a former mall security guard.
