Plans for 3000 megawatts power station in Basra

BASRA / IraqiNews.com: Basra province is planning to build a big power generation station in a coastal area overlooking the Gulf, calling on  the central government to give permission to have direct contracts, Basra‘s governor’s adviser announced today.  Mundhir Hashim told IraqiNews.com  that the province began preliminary planning for the station, with a capacity of 3000 megawatts.  The cost of the station is expected to reach 2.5 billion dollars and to be financed from the petrodollar revenues generated in the province.  In addition, the station will produce no less than 300.000 cubic meters of potable water per day, which will meet the needs of the province of pure water.  The feasibility studies will be completed within three years, as Hashim said.  Central regulations prevent the local provinces from contracting for power generation stations more than 30 megawatts.  Basra city, center of the province, lies 590 km south of the capital, Baghdad.
