Baghdad’s green revolution: turning waste into renewable energy

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – On April 1st, the National Investment Commission of Iraq announced the launch of an ambitious project to generate electric power from waste in Baghdad. The initiative aims to expand to other provinces, showcasing Iraq’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and environmental conservation.

Powering forward: integral to a comprehensive energy strategy

This project is part of a broader initiative by the Iraqi government to adopt better energy solutions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. By providing renewable energy and minimizing carbon emissions, Iraq aims to combat climate change and address the country’s severe environmental impacts.

During the press conference, Dr. Haider Makkiyah, President of the National Investment Commission, emphasized that the waste-to-energy project has the full support of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Al-Sudani. Makkiyah explained that the project will utilize advanced technology to process over 3,000 tons of waste daily, accounting for about 30% of Baghdad’s daily waste production.

Additionally, the Vice President of the commission, Salar Mohammed Ameen, stated that a ministerial committee has been established in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Municipality of Baghdad. This committee will closely monitor the project and stay updated on the latest global and regional renewable energy developments.

Electric shortfalls and hopes for the future

This project comes at a critical time, as Iraq’s electricity production falls significantly short of demand. With Iran’s fuel exports to Iraq steadily decreasing, a substantial gap in electrical power has emerged, exacerbating the energy crisis.

The Iraqi people have high hopes for this set of projects, especially the waste-to-energy initiative. It promises not only to boost electricity production but also to reduce waste and ultimately mitigate the effects of climate change. This comprehensive approach aims to address multiple issues simultaneously, offering a sustainable solution to the country’s pressing energy and environmental challenges.
