Civilian killed in Kut

WASSIT / IraqiNews.com: A civilian was killed on Wednesday by unknown gunmen in eastern Kut city, a police source said. “Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a civilian in Anwar region in eastern Kut, killing him instantly,” the source told IraqiNews.com. “Police forces cordoned off the region to arrest the gunmen, who fled to unknown place,” he added, noting that the body was sent to the al-Zahraa hospital in Kut. A Shiite province, Wassit, 180 km south of Baghdad, is in the east of the country. Its name comes from the Arabic word meaning “middle,” as it lies along the Tigris about midway between Baghdad and Basra. Its major cities include the capital, al-Kut, and al-Hayy. Prior to 1976 it was known as Kut Province. SH (P) 1
