23rd Anniversary of Halabja’s chemical attack commemorated

SULAIMANIYA / IraqiNews.com – North Iraq Kurdistan’s city of Halabja had witnessed on Wednesday a special commemoration for the 23 rd anniversary of the city’s chemical attack by the former Iraqi regime that killed 5,000 and wounded 10,000 of its inhabitants on March 11, 1988.   A city official told IraqiNews.com news agency that “a special celebration took place on Wednesday, to remind the Iraqi people and the world at large of Halabja’s chemical attack, attended by Kurdistan Region’s Premier, Barham Saleh and a number of other leading personalities.”   The celebrations also included playing Kurdish national songs and standing for one minute to commemorate the soles of the victims of the Halabja catastrophe.   Halabja city had been victim for a chemical attack by Iraq ’s former ruling Baath regime on March 16, 1988, that killed 5,000 civilians and wounded 10,000 others from among the city’s inhabitants.   IT / SKH
