Iraq fears Iranian wrath for Syrian question, political analyst
BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Iraqi abstention on the Arab League suspension of Syrian membership was done for fear of Iranian wrath, as speculated by an analyst. Other Analyst said that the decision reflects internal Iraqi political division. Analyst Hadi Jalou Mar’i told IraqiNews.com that the Iraqi stand tries to find a sort of balance between US and Iranian powers in the region, so “Iraqi stand was as holding the stick from the middle”. He excluded that Iraq will assist Syria materially or technically at this stage, because it does not want political negative stand if the present regime fell. Mar’i confirmed that Syria will take the support form Iran, Hezbollah or even Palestinian Hamas movement. On the other side, political analyst Dr.Sardar Qadir, Sulaimaniya university, told IraqiNews.com that the abstention vote reflects the state of division in Iraqi internal front. He pointed out that the Sunni sect and the Kurds support the Syrian uprising, while the powers supporting Iran want the stay of the Syrian regime, which is a basic ally to Iran. Dr.Qadir added that such decision will have negative aspects on Iraqi relations with other Arab countries, expressing that the Arab statesmen should understand Iraqi position on this question. Iraqi foreign minister Hoshiar Zebari said in a press conference today (Monday) that the Iraqi government is not against the Syrian people, referring that there are international and regional calculations for Iraqi abstention.
