11-member family killed by U.S. fire in Mosul

NINEWA / IraqiNews.com: Eleven persons from one family were allegedly killed by U.S. fire in western Mosul city, an official security source said on Sunday. “U.S. troops killed 11 people from one family while they were conducting a dawn raid on a house in 17 Tammuz (July) neighborhood, western Mosul,” the source told IraqiNews.com. “Iraqi army forces delivered the bodies, which had been placed in nylon bags by the U.S. forces, to the morgue in Mosul city,” the source explained. The Iraqi army is currently attending to a three-year-old child from the same family who has survived, while police forces are taking care of a three-month-old baby. Meanwhile, a local medic from the morgue said that the dead included three women, three children of 12 years old and five men, whose ages range between 30 and 50. During a phone call with IraqiNews.com, a media advisor for the Multi-National Force (MNF), al-Miqdad Jibrael, denied any knowledge of the incident. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. The original city of Mosul stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient biblical city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has now grown to encompass substantial areas on both banks, with five bridges linking the two sides. Despite having an amount of Kurdish population, it does not form part of the area controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government Kurdistan RegionG). There are different communities in Mosul like Christians, Shiites and Kurds along with a Sunni majority. The fabric Muslin, long manufactured here, is named for this city. Another historically important product of the area is Mosul marble. The city is also a historic center for the Nestorian Christianity of the Assyrians, containing the tombs of several Old Testament prophets such as Jonah, Yunus in Arabic, and Nahum. SS (S) 1
