WASSIT, Sept. 19 (Iraqi News) – The mortuary of al-Zahraa hospital in the city of al-Kut on Friday received a civilian man’s body showing clear signs of having been tortured, a medic from Wassit province said. “The body, found on the Kut-Baghdad highway near al-Aziziya district, (90 km) north of Kut, is of an unidentified civilian man,” the source told IraqiNews.com – Voices of Iraq – (Iraqi News) on condition of anonymity. “The body showed signs of having been tortured and shot in different areas,” the source added. A Shiite province, Wassit, 180 km south of Baghdad, is in the east of the country. Its name comes from the Arabic word meaning “middle,” as it lies along the Tigris about midway between Baghdad and Basra. Its major cities include the capital, al-Kut, and al-Hayy. Prior to 1976 it was known as Kut Province. AmR (P) 1
