Kobler shows concerns over delay in selecting new members of IHEC

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq, Martin Kobler, expresses concern over the delay in selecting the new Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).

A statement by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) quoted him, as saying “Any further postponement in appointing the new Commissioners would pose a serious threat to the democratic process in Iraq.”

“It is vital that all decision-makers now come together to urgently complete the selection,” he added, noting that ” This will pave the way for the governorate council elections to go ahead as scheduled in March 2013 where this is in the interest of the people of Iraq.”

Kobler also repeated his call for the parties to ensure that women are represented in the new Board of Commissioners.

UNAMI has been committed to extending its support and advice to the selection of new Commissioners. The mission has been encouraging an inclusive approach throughout the process.
