MoE seize radioactive contaminated materials in Basra, Dhi Qar

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Ministry of Environment announced “Seizing additional amounts of materials that are radioactive polluted coming from Japan in provinces of Basra and Dhi Qar after discovering them by the technical teams associated to Protection from Radioactivity Center.”

A statement by the Ministry cited “The Ministry’s departments in Baghdad and provinces launched intensive campaigns for regular examinations especially for the metal equipments and spare parts that were imported from Japan which have been radioactively affected by the damages happened in the Fukushima reactor after the earthquake that occurred there in 2011.”

“The divisions of Environment Directorate in Basra and Nasiriya managed to seize 207 polluted pieces of spare parts, 200 pieces in Basra and 7 others in Nasiriya in shops of spare parts,” the statement added.

The statement mentioned “The Ministry prevented displaying these contaminated materials in local markets till completion of the procedures to turn it back to the their origin,” pointing out that “This is part of efforts to protect Iraqi citizens and the environment from risks of radioactive contamination,” the statement concluded.
