Arbil hosts conf. on developing abattoirs
ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: Iraq’s Syndicate of Veterinarians held its 1st conference on developing slaughterhouses in the country in the city of Arbil on November 24-25, according to the syndicate chief on Monday. “The event, held under the rubric ‘Slaughterhouses in Iraq’, will discuss the condition of abattoirs and problems facing them,” Mohammed Hilal Jaafar told IraqiNews.com. He said invitations to attend the meeting were sent to the Iraqi ministries of agriculture, health, public works, environment, science & technology and higher education as well as the agriculture ministry in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. “Among the problems of these slaughterhouses is the lack of sufficient water and refrigerated trucks to carry beef to stores, in addition to the butchers’ practices of unregulated slaughtering outside abattoirs in the absence of government control,” said Jaafar. He added that the conference will be followed by a media awareness-raising campaign to reach the right bases for improving the way slaughterhouses work in Iraq. AmR (P) 1
