1st cornea transplant in Iraq in 5 years Monday

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The Iraqi capital Baghdad’s Ibn al-Haytham eye hospital will host on Monday the first cornea transplant surgery in five years, the al-Rasafa health chief revealed on Sunday. “An Iraqi medical team will start tomorrow a surgery to transplant the first human cornea at Ibn al-Haytham hospital in Baghdad,” Ali Bostan told IraqiNews.com. “The hospital has received last week four corneas from the U.S. state of North Carolina, three of them were free and the fourth for $1500 in addition to transport costs,” he said. “Conducting these surgeries inside Iraq would lessen the need to go abroad for this purpose,” Bostan added.
