National committee formed to protect Iraqi cultural heritage

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers formed a national committee concerned in protecting the cultural properties and the committee will be chaired by the General Director of committees affairs Ibtesam Azez and with the membership of representatives of the Ministries of Interior, Defense, Culture, Tourism and Antiquities in addition to the General Secretariat of the Cabinet and the Shura Council of the state.

The General Secretariat of the Cabinet reported in statement received by IraqiNews.com on Tuesday that ”The committee will assume drafting the laws related to the means used to prevent exporting, importing and transfering of ownership of cultural property through illegal methods.”

Many aspects of the Iraqi cultural heritage was stolen or moved since the eighties of the last century due to the wars which the former regime waged in addition to the weak security situation which accompanied the American occupation after 2003. \
