Maliki assures to Carter, need of IA to develop defense abilities

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Premier, Nouri al-Maliki, assured to the United States Deputy Secretary of Defense, Ashton Carter, the need of the Iraqi Army to develop its defense abilities.

A statement by Maliki’s office received by IraqiNews.com on Thursday cited “Maliki received Carter, at his office in Baghdad, where they discussed the means of developing the mutual relations between the two countries and activating the strategic pact.”

“Maliki assured to Carter, the need of the Iraqi Army to develop its defense abilities to sustain security in Iraq and protect its sovereignty, calling to expedite arming the Iraqi forces with the defense weapons,” the statement added.

“Carter assured that the aim behind his visit is to provide the needs of Iraq in eliminating terrorism as soon as possible, pointing out to a soon visit of the US Defense Minister to Baghdad for the same aim,” the statement pointed out.

“The two sides have also discussed the regional updates and the Syrian situation in particular,” the statement concluded.
