Parl. to extend time-span for provincial councils

ARBIL / IraqiNews.com: The Kurdistan Parliament on Wednesday will hold an extraordinary session to extend the time-span for the provincial councils in the region, the head of the parliamentary legal committee said on Wednesday. “The term of the councils ends late this month,” Shirwan Haydari told IraqiNews.com news agency. Parliament was supposed to pass the law on provincial councils before the end of 2008, but disputes over the powers of the governor and the councils hindered the vote. The provincial council elections are due to be held on January 31 in 14 out of 18 Iraqi provinces. SS (P)/SR 1
