18,000 persons to supervise Karbala elections

KARBALA / IraqiNews.com: A total of 18,000 supervisors will run the electoral process during the Karbala provincial council elections on January 31, the media official of the Independent High Elections Commission (IHEC) said on Tuesday. “A total of 18,800 supervisors have been registered in the Karbala commission office to monitor the elections and register violations,” Hussein al-Aameri told IraqiNews.com news agency. “They include teachers, lawyers, and university professors,” he added, noting that they will run 214 electoral centers. Nearly 1,179 candidates, including 320 women, are competing for 27 seats in Karbala’s provincial council. The provincial council elections are due to be held on January 31 in 14 out of 18 Iraqi provinces. The holy Shiite city of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.   SH (S)/SR 1
