PM urges UNSC to reconsider Iraq resolutions

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Friday called on the UN Security Council to reconsider resolutions issued against Iraq after its 1990 invasion of neighboring Kuwait. “The meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon involved consultations over key issues like Iraq’s call on the UNSC to reconsider resolutions adopted after the invasion of Kuwait, which dubbed Iraq as threat to international security, and the issue of Kirkuk,” Maliki said in a press conference today (Feb. 6) attended by IraqiNews.com news agency. For his part, Ban praised the efforts exerted by the Iraqi government and the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) in rendering “successful” the local elections held “for the first time by Iraqis themselves”. “The UN would continue supporting Iraq in the political, economic and cultural spheres,” he said, adding the UN activities in Iraq are focusing on activating the political dialogue, backing national reconciliation, providing assistance and developing educational programs. Ban had arrived in Iraq earlier on Friday (Feb. 6) hours after the results of the provincial council elections were announced on Thursday (Feb. 5) evening. He met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and discussed with him a host of internal issues and Iraq’s relations with neighboring countries. AmR (P) 1
