SRSG welcomes ratification of parliamentary elections law

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Mr. Nickolay Mladenov congratulated the Council of Representatives for passing the national election law yesterday.

A statement by UNAMI received by IraqiNews.com quoted Mladenov as saying “The UN applauds the relentless efforts of the Speakership of the Council and the leaders of the political blocs on reaching an agreement on the draft Elections Law that was just passed by the Council of Representatives. Political leaders have worked hard in a spirit of compromise that is key to Iraq’s future.”

“I urge all parties to ensure a stable, safe and secure environment in which the elections can take place as scheduled,” he added.”UNAMI will continue to support the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) now and in future to ensure that the national elections are conducted in accordance with Iraqi law and international standards on 30 April 2014,” the SRSG concluded.
