Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A government source denied, on Tuesday, Reuters claims that the Iraqi government assured the United States that American troops would be granted immunity from prosecution as part of a deal to obtain US military aid.

The government source stated that “what is published by some media outlets to grant immunity to American forces in Iraq are baseless.”

Reuters quoted U.S. officials as saying that Baghdad had given assurances to the United States that U.S. special forces, which President Barack Obama is sending to Iraq, would enjoy immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts.

In the face of Iraq’s security deterioration Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki declared a state of high alert on June 10, 2014 after fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, ISIL, seized full control of Nineveh province and began advancing towards Saladin province.
