URGENT: Kurdish Peshmerga forces control eastern part of Mosul Dam

damMosul (IraqiNews.com) A commander of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces announced that his forces regained control over the eastern part of Mosul Dam northwest Iraq after it had been seized by terrorist gangs of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

The Peshmerga Major-General, Abdul Rahman said, in a statement followed by IraqiNews.com, that “the Peshmerga forces killed several elements of ISIL”, adding “we are still advancing forward; it is supposed to announce for good news in the coming hours.

On Saturday, the Kurdish forces have launched an offensive, Supported by the American aviation, to regain control of Mosul Dam, which is considered as one of the largest dams Iraq.

It is noteworthy that the of Mosul Dam was built in 1983 on the Tigris River at the Lake of Mosul, 50 kilometers north of Mosul, featuring basic power plant of Nineveh province. It also constitutes the main source of irrigation of agricultural lands in the province.
