UK rules out sending groud troop to Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The British prime minister, David Cameron, told MPs that the US-led coalition “needs our help in the crucial task of conducting air strikes” against militants he described as “a bunch of psychopaths”.

He ruled out sending ground troops to Iraq.

“This is not a threat on the far side of the world,” he said. “This operation is about protecting our people too. It’s not something we should subcontract to the air forces of other nations around the world.”

The government insists that its proposed military action had a legal basis because Iraq had requested help both from the UN and him personally, Mr Cameron said. “There’s a clear legal basis for UK military action,” he stressed.

The prime minister also advised MPs the campaign would not be concluded swiftly. “The hallmarks of this campaign will be patience and persistence, not shock and awe,” he concluded. /End/
