Barazani urged to postpone draft constitution ratification

SULAIMANIYA / IraqiNews.com: Sulaimaniya’s provincial council on Thursday called on the president of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, Massoud al-Barazani, to postpone the ratification of the draft constitution and to put it to a public referendum. “Today, the council met and discussed the ratification of the draft constitution of the Kurdistan region. Thirty-two out of 35 members have called on Barazani to put off the ratification of the draft constitution and to put it to a referendum,” Sulaimaniya’s governor, Dana Ahmed Majeed, said in a press conference that was attended by IraqiNews.com news agency. The members have requested a postponement until after the upcoming polls, according to the governor. The Parliament in Iraq’s Kurdistan is scheduled to ratify the region’s constitution in the coming few days, before putting it to a public referendum. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has set July 25 as the date for parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region. The elections will coincide with the presidential polls. SS (P) 1
