Detainees at al-Taji, Cropper prisons down to 8,305

BAGHDAD / IraqiNews.com: The number of detainees held at Baghdad’s al-Taji and Cropper prisons has dropped to 8,305, a media adviser working with the U.S. forces said on Monday. “The detainees include two juveniles and 14 non-Iraqis,” Kareem al-Sayyab told Iraqi News. Since the implementation of the security agreement with the United States in early January 2009, a total of 5,703 detainees have been released, according to the adviser. A few days ago, Sayyab said the U.S. forces would close Basra’s Camp Bucca and move all detainees to al-Taji and Cropper in Baghdad. Sayyab denied the presence of female detainees in U.S.-run detention centers and prisons. Every month, the U.S. forces hand over 750 detainees to the Iraqi authorities in accordance with the security pact signed between the two governments. SS (P) 1
