(Reuters) The Syrian army said it recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State on Thursday with help from allied forces and Russian air strikes.

The army and allied forces advanced inside Palmyra on Thursday after Islamic State pulled its fighters out of the city, a war monitoring group said.
