Erbil (BasNews.com) Nouri al-Maliki, head of Iraqi Dawa Party and former Iraqi PM, who is regarded as a strong opponent to the Kurds’ right to self-determination, stated that there is a conspiracy to divide Iraq after the Islamic State (IS) is eliminated.

Maliki-affiliated Afaq TV reported that while hosting a number of professors from Baghdad University, Maliki warned about new conspiracy plans to divide Iraq after IS.

The recent Turkey conference is aimed at dividing Iraq, Maliki said referring to the meeting held by the Iraqi Sunnis earlier this month.

Maliki’s remarks follow a statement by Alla Talabani, the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Iraqi parliament, who said that Kurdistan’s independence is a conspiracy plan against the sovereignty of Iraq.

Maliki was blamed for the fall of a large proportion of the Iraqi territory into the hands of IS group in 2014 during his reign and he is also accused of sectarian-based assassination of hundreds of Sunni figures in Iraq.

However Maliki is trying to once again come to power in the upcoming elections in the country.
